There is already plenty of content circulating about what not to do during the Hungry Ghost Festival. I am not going to add to that pile.
Instead, this is for those who want to do something — quietly, simply, meaningfully. Whether you have never given ancestor veneration a second thought, are newly curious about it, or have maintained a practice for years, this is less about ritual protocol and more about the one thing that actually matters: the gesture of remembering.

Why It Means Something, Even If You Are Not Sure You Believe
The Hungry Ghost Festival, at its core, is about acknowledgement. The belief that the veil between the living and those who have passed is thinner this month — that loved ones and ancestors draw closer, that they notice being remembered — is not one you need to hold with certainty to participate meaningfully.
Some of my clients come from families where this was practised deeply. Others are approaching it for the first time. Others are somewhere in the middle — respectful, curious, not entirely sure what they think. All of them are welcome here.
What I can tell you from my own practice and the sessions I hold: the act of remembering, done with sincerity, lands somewhere. You do not need elaborate belief to do it with integrity.

What You Can Actually Do This Month
It does not need to be complicated, expensive, or perfect. What matters is the intention behind it.
If you already have an ancestor altar, clear it this week. Not a deep overhaul — just a tidy. Wipe it down, remove anything stale, and create a little space that says: I have not forgotten you.

Then offer something simple:
- Fresh flowers — any flowers they might have liked, or simply whatever is fresh and clean.
- A piece of fruit. A plain cup of coffee or tea. Something they used to enjoy eating, if you remember it. These are not grand gestures. They are the equivalent of setting a place at the table.
- If you remember a fragrance they wore or loved — a particular soap, a cigarette brand, a specific food smell — even lighting a candle in that vicinity is enough. Scent carries familiarity in a way that words sometimes do not.
- If you do not have an altar, a small cleared tabletop space is entirely sufficient. A cloth, a few items, a photograph if you have one.
The simplicity is not a shortcut — it is the point. You are not performing for anyone. You are making a quiet acknowledgement to people who shaped the life you are currently living.
A Note for the Spiritually Sensitive This Month
For those who are already energetically attuned — empaths, practitioners, anyone who regularly feels more than the average person in a room — the Hungry Ghost period warrants a little more intentionality around your own protection.
The veil being thinner cuts both ways. The loved ones you want to welcome closer can draw near. So can energies you did not invite
If you have existing protection in place, check in with it — review the signs from the previous piece if you need a reference point. If you are not sure what you are currently carrying, or whether your field is adequately fortified for a heightened month, that is worth addressing before rather than after.
