July 2026 Edition

I have met people who can rattle off their spiritual CV in under two minutes. Three workshops overseas. A crystal collection with its own dedicated shelf. An attunement here, a certification there. And somewhere in the middle of all of it — a quiet, persistent unhappiness they cannot quite explain. That is the thing about spiritual materialism. It looks exactly like growth from the outside.

The fascination with gifts and abilities is something I understand — people curious about how I work, what I sense, what I see. Genuine ability is interesting. But I have noticed the curiosity often stops at the surface of the gift rather than turning inward to ask the harder question: what does my own development actually look like?

Collecting skills is not the same as doing the work. Attending the workshop is not the same as integrating what it surfaced. And acquiring the next certification — especially when the last one has not yet settled — is sometimes just a more sophisticated way of staying comfortable. True growth is rarely photogenic. It usually looks like sitting with something uncomfortable long enough to understand the situation/yourself. It looks like changing behaviour, not just language. It looks like being genuinely humbled by something and choosing to stay present with that, instead of moving on to the next thing.

I am not saying workshops are useless or that learning is not valuable. I am saying: at some point, the acquiring has to stop and the actual work has to begin. Most people know, somewhere in themselves, which phase they are in. The spiritual path is not a credential, it is a lifelong practice. And a practice asks something of you every single day — not just on retreat weekends, not just when the energy feels good, not just when you feel called.

If you have been accumulating and still feel like something is missing — that gap is not usually a sign that you need more. It is a sign that it is time to go deeper into what you already have. There is a difference between being fascinated by the gift and actually doing the work of becoming. One keeps you circling. The other moves you forward.
