Sept 2026 Edition

I hear it almost every week, in some form. A client comes in for a Reiki session, and somewhere in the conversation before we begin, they say some version of: "I don't know, I'm just really tired." They have usually already tried the obvious fix. More sleep. An earlier bedtime. A weekend with nothing on the calendar. And they are still exhausted.

This used to puzzle me less than it does now, because I have started noticing the pattern too clearly to ignore.

Rest is not one thing. It is at least seven things — physical, mental, sensory, creative, emotional, social, and spiritual — and most people are only actively addressing one or two of them. Sleep covers physical rest. Maybe a slow Sunday covers some sensory rest. Everything else quietly accumulates a deficit that a lazy weekend was never going to touch.

What I Actually See in Sessions
The clients who come in the most depleted are rarely the ones getting too little sleep. They are usually the ones who have optimised sleep and little else — high performers, founders, people whose calendars are full of meaningful things, who genuinely cannot identify what is missing because on paper, they are doing everything right.

What is usually missing is emotional rest, spiritual rest, or both. The kind of rest that comes from being fully yourself around someone, rather than managing an image. The kind that comes from connecting to something larger than your to-do list. These are the categories that get cut first when life gets busy, because they do not look urgent, and because our culture is not particularly good at treating them as real.

I will admit something here: this was true for me at some point too, for longer than I would like to say. It is a strange thing, doing spiritual work professionally for others while quietly neglecting my own spiritual rest — the kind that has nothing to do with client sessions and everything to do with simply being still with something bigger than the calendar. I had physical rest handled. I had social rest handled. The categories I actually needed were the ones I kept assuming I did not have time for.

Why This Matters More For City Dwellers
There is a specific pressure that comes with being based somewhere fast-paced and achievement-oriented — the sense that rest has to be earned, and that being unproductive is somehow a small moral failing. I see this constantly in the people I work with: genuinely accomplished, genuinely exhausted, and quietly convinced that admitting to needing more than sleep is indulgent.

It is not indulgent. It is maintenance. A body and energetic field running consistently on one or two types of rest is not sustainable — it just fails quietly instead of dramatically, which makes it easy to ignore until it cannot be ignored anymore.

Where to Start
You do not need to overhaul your life to address this. You need to notice which categories you have been skipping, and be honest about why.

If sleep has stopped being the answer, the deficit is probably somewhere else — in connection, in stillness, in creativity, in feeling genuinely at ease rather than performing ease. Reiki work is one of the more direct ways to address the categories that do not respond to a good night's sleep: it restores at the level of the energetic field and your internal well-being, not just the body — which is often where the real depletion has been showing up all along, whether that looks like eczema flare-ups, lingering aches, or breakouts that will not resolve.

If "I am just tired" has been your answer for a while now, it might be worth asking which of the seven you have actually been neglecting.
